My Word Of The Year

This past new year, when the clock turned midnight and the calendar turned, something happened on my social media newsfeed that I’d never seen before. Suddenly, everywhere was the same concept being posted by nearly every single influencer I follow! Everyone was talking about their “Word Of The Year.”

I don’t know if I’ve been sleeping under a rock for the past few years or something, but this was an entirely new concept to me. However, after some quick reading, it became clear that this was a trend I could totally get behind.

I LOVE New Years Resolutions. I usually keep them on a note on my phone so I can read them often and hold myself accountable. I tend to do decent job of keeping them for the most part, and it’s definitely fun to look back at the end of December and see how far I’ve come. But the idea of a broader sweeping ‘word’ that could touch on more than just specific target actions was interesting to me. The idea of implementing a theme that could impact every single part of my life as an overall cohesive whole really spoke to me.

The word I ended up choosing is: Intentional.

Let’s Get Organized!

I chose this word because while I do feel very proud and happy about the things I accomplished in 2018, I feel like many of the best moments are ones that sort of just fell into place. And while that is all well and good, it’s also the work of fate, which unfortunately cannot always be counted on.

Sometimes, in life, we need to take things into our own hands. Good things happen to those who hustle, and I truly believe that is something I need to apply to every aspect of my life.

In 2019 I will be more intentional in my friendships. I’ve always been so blessed in abundance with wonderful people in my life, and for that I am grateful. I will nourish those relationships, and diligently pursue new ones, as I continue to make my new town my home.

In 2019 I will be more intentional in my faith. My faith has evolved as I’ve grown older and faced challenges and circumstances I could have never predicted. I am the kind of person, however, that believes it is important to put your faith on the metaphorical chopping block and ask the tough questions. This is what will strengthen it, and ultimately what will strengthen you. I will pray with purpose and challenge myself with deepened focus.

In 2019 I will be intentional in my use of social media. Listen, I know a lot of people think that social media is the worst thing to ever happen to humankind. I am not of that belief system. In fact, I love social media! But you know what I hate? The mindless, time wasting scroll. This year, I will fill my feed with purposeful and meaningful content and make the best use of my time online.

In 2019, I will be intentional with my physical health. This year, we started 2019 off with a 2 week vacation to Jamaica, during which Mac was really great about encouraging me to work-out.  I realized that if I couldn’t motivate myself to get to the gym during days when I had nothing to do but lay in the sunshine, how the heck was I going to motivate myself to get to the gym on days when I’d be at work for 9 hours?! With this in mind, I started the year off on the right foot to kick-start a pattern I plan to keep going forward.

In 2019 I will be intentional in my relationship. This is the year when Mac and I are finally getting married! After more than 6 years of dating we will be tying the knot in May and we are both so incredibly excited to finally be Mr. and Mrs. One thing that I really like about our relationship is that we both take marriage very seriously. In 2019 we will continue to work to build stronger communication, have more fun together, and grow our love even more as we enter this next phase.

Friends,  I could go on and on. When it comes to intentionality (yes I know that’s not actually a word). I have a heck of a lot of goals. I have considered how becoming more intentional will affect me when it comes to: family, writing, mental health, home, organization, career, food, philanthropy, and so much more.

This is why I love the concept of choosing a word of the year. It is far-reaching and impactful in so many different areas of our life, as opposed to specific smaller goals.

I look forward to sharing my journey with intentionality here on this blog over the next 365 days. I hope you’ll stay with me each step of the way!
